How to respond to a plan check correction notice in Oakland

You submitted your permit application. Weeks passed. And then you got a correction notice.

If you're working through the Oakland Building Services Division, you're not alone, and how you respond determines how much longer your project gets delayed.

First, understand what a correction notice actually is

It is not a rejection. It is a request for additional information or revisions. Most correction notices fall into: missing documentation, code compliance questions, scope clarification, or zoning issues.

Read every comment before you respond

The most common mistake is responding too quickly, addressing some comments but missing others. Read every comment. If something is unclear, call the plan checker directly. A 10-minute conversation can save you a 4-week resubmittal cycle.

Address every comment in your resubmittal

Include a written response letter referencing each correction by number, explaining what was changed in the drawings and where to find it. A resubmittal without a response letter will be sent back.

Watch for conflicting comments between departments

Oakland routes applications to Planning, Building, Fire, and Public Works. If two departments issue conflicting corrections, call both and get alignment before you resubmit. Guessing will restart your review clock.

When to bring in a permit expediter

If your correction notice has more than 5–6 comments, involves multiple departments, or you're on your second or third round of corrections, get help. At PermitBox, we review correction notices, coordinate with Oakland Building Services, and prepare resubmittal packages that address every comment clearly.
